In an excavation process, each finding will certainly be an indication of the involvement and connection of each element: discipline, actors, and the knowledge contained in it. Thus in the process, BDB'21 will undergo the stages of identification, interaction, and participation which are expected to jointly be able to bring up alternative thoughts and practices, as well as enrich the potentials and solutions for the community. Curated by Prananda L. Malasan [Design Science Researcher], Krishnamurti Suparka [Interdisciplinary Practitioner], and Herry Sutresna [Designer], BDB will respond to various ideas, objects, and practice findings into several programs in the format of showcases, discourses, and public archives.
BDB'21 invites all actors and the public to convey all forms of thoughts, objects, and actions, as responses to the general themes. The submissions will be processed in the format of showcases (exhibitions, installations, etc.) and discourse (seminars, discussions, etc.), or as contributions in the process of mapping via public-archive submission (artifact/documentation of text and photos, etc.) that are reflective to the kinds of thoughts, objects, and actions of the Bandung creative ecosystem.

Bandung Design Biennale is an event that is held every 2 years, as a forum to bring together creative ideas of designers/activists/artists. BDB also strives to provide solutions to the problems that surround us.
The theme for this years’ BDB is “Excavate: Mapping the Commons Across the Spectrum."
It can be in any form, but later it will be put into 3 categories, namely thoughts, objects, and actions. Examples: artifacts, documents, posters, words, etc.
It is unlimited! each individual or group has no limit on the number of submissions.
The initial plan was to have it in 14 venues (2 large venues, 4 medium scale, and 8 small scale). However, in response to the current situation, BDB 2021 will be held 50% online and 50% offline.
The open call submission period is held on August 2nd - August 27th (3 weeks). Regarding the curation process, the range will be very wide.
No, the submission theme can be adjusted according to each participant's response. It is hoped that participants do not need to be too locked up by the word "excavate". e.g. “The role of typography in social change”, how is font design used in visual communication for social change? Or how do designers contribute to space problems in Bandung? Through this theme, we invite the participants to explore as much information as possible.
Of course you can! At BDB 2021, we wish to optimize the digital infrastructure to engage with friends outside the city. Regardless whether or not they’ve had specific connections with Bandung (birthplace, study, work, etc), all is welcome to participate.
There is no charge to become a participant.
In the process, there will be more emphasis on the process itself, so that the peak event will be in November. It is slightly different because it places more emphasis on the “Excavate” point itself, explores the potential that did not exist before, and wants to explore new perspectives on the design ecosystem from outside Bandung.
There is always the possibility of not being selected, but the potential is very small. Our task is to respond to what we receive and to process them according to their suitable outcomes.
There will be several activities, such as discussions via social media and websites. There will also be several pre-events leading up to September 7th.
